Voykit pocket guide · Colombia
La Macarena
Go only for Caño Cristales in the bloom window (roughly Jul–Nov): 3 nights, one guided river day, book a package with the Satena flight included.
La Macarena is a small Orinoquía town that exists for one reason: it is the gateway to Caño Cristales, the river that turns red, yellow and green when the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera blooms. You cannot enter the park alone, flights are few, and cash is scarce, so most travellers book a 3-day package from Bogotá. The town itself is a one-street stop with panaderías, a park and a Wednesday shutdown.

Get around
The town is a numbered grid small enough to walk end to end in under 10 minutes. Everything outside town — the park, Caño Cristales, Caño de Piedras, El Raudal — needs a guide and a vehicle (jeep, moto-taxi, boat or horse), arranged through your agency.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, cheek kiss between women and mixed pairs; avoid: Launching into requests without a greeting
- Politeness: 'Con gusto', 'a la orden'; avoid: Blunt commands
- Topics: Coffee, football, food; avoid: Escobar jokes, drug talk
- Showing valuables: Keep phones away; avoid: 'Dar papaya'
Scams and watch-outs
- You cannot visit Caño Cristales without a licensed guide; daily visitor numbers are capped and a permit is required.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent are banned inside the park to protect the aquatic plants — bring long sleeves, long trousers and a hat instead.
- Malaria is a real risk in this lowland region; yellow-fever vaccination is commonly required before travel (check with your clinic).
- The single ATM (Banco Agrario) charges high fees, runs out of cash and fails during power cuts — bring enough pesos for the whole stay.
- Flights are postponed by weather and operator issues; build a spare day into the plan.
- Most businesses close on Wednesday, the town's chosen day of rest.
The town itself is calm and walkable; the real risks are the remote park, malaria, heat, and running out of cash. Keep valuables low-key, travel with your guide, and do not wander off the marked route.
