Bijapur — officially Vijayapura — was the capital of the Adil Shahi sultans from 1490 to 1686, and their tombs, mosques and citadel walls still stand inside a small, low-rise town. Gol Gumbaz, the mausoleum with the second-largest dome in the world, is the headline; the rest of the eight main sites sit within about 3 km of each other. Tourist infrastructure is thin, so come for the monuments, sleep one night on Station Road and move on to Badami or Hampi.

Getting around

The town is small: most of the eight main sites are within 3 km, so mix walking with auto-rickshaws. No auto has a meter — agree the fare before you get in, and expect to bargain. Tongas (horse carriages) wait at MG Square and outside Gol Gumbaz and will do a full-day monument circuit for a negotiated round figure; note the rides are not animal-friendly. Autos and tongas also sell the standard eight-site package.

Watch out

Safety

Bijapur is a small, calm town and violent crime against visitors is rare; the real issues are unlit pavements after dark, aggressive auto pricing and summer heat. Women travelling alone report stares rather than danger — dress modestly at active dargahs and mosques, and be back at your hotel by about 21:00.
  • No auto-rickshaw uses a meter: fix the price before boarding.
  • Gol Gumbaz and Ibrahim Rauza charge foreigners a much higher entry than Indians — carry small notes.
  • Some citadel gates (Mecca Gate, Alapur Gate) are encroached and not really visitable.
  • Summer afternoons hit 40 °C+; do monuments before 11:00 and after 16:00.
  • Bars are basic and mostly male; drink at your hotel instead.
  • The airport is not yet operational — do not plan a flight in.
