Collector

Skip as a base: no beds, no fuel, no shops. Stop 20–40 min for the weir picnic area and the Dreamers Gate sculpture, or drive past.

Collector is a village of about 300 people on the Federal Highway between Goulburn and Canberra, a couple of minutes off the road and roughly 30 minutes from either. It has a weir with a small picnic area, a large metal sculpture on Church Street, and a memorial to a policeman shot by a bushranger in 1865. There is no accommodation and no petrol, so it works as a leg-stretch, not a stay.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car or bicycle. The whole village is a 10-minute walk end to end, but there is no public transport within Collector and no taxi rank. Murrays Coaches can drop you from Canberra once daily and pick you up only if you book ahead; the coach will not divert into the town without a booking.

Door to door: About 35 min

Federal Highway north, about 30 min by car

Big enough for fuel, food and a bed; the cathedral and the old courthouse fill an hour.

Door to door: About 35 min

Federal Highway south, about 30 min by car

Museums, galleries and the airport; the obvious base if Collector is a side stop.

Door to door: About 1 h

Via Canberra or the Gundaroo road, about 45–55 min by car

Woodworks, a pub and a good bakery; pairs well with a Lake George look-out.

Lake George

Door to door: Under 10 min

Look-out on the Federal Highway, a few minutes from Collector

Usually a grass flat, not a lake; the view from the look-out is the point.

Via Canberra, about 45 min by car

Only worth it if you are already heading into Canberra's east.

Too far for a return trip from Collector; sleep there instead.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

No accommodation in Collector

Sleep in Goulburn (about 30 min north) or Canberra (about 30 min south); both have motels, pubs with rooms and hotels.

Goulburn

Best for a Sydney–Melbourne or Sydney–Snowy Mountains run; highway motels and a town centre with food.

Canberra

Best if Canberra is the destination; more choice and later check-in.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the highway (kangaroos at dawn and dusk, trucks), summer heat with no shade, and running out of fuel because there is no petrol in town.
  • No petrol in Collector: the store is closed. Fill up in Goulburn or Canberra before you turn off.
  • No accommodation, no supermarket and no ATM: bring water and cash if you plan to buy anything.
  • Do not swim in the weir.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on the highway at dawn and dusk: slow down on the Federal Highway.
  • Summer heat is the real risk: 35 °C (95 °F)+ days with no shade at the picnic area.
