Collector
Skip as a base: no beds, no fuel, no shops. Stop 20–40 min for the weir picnic area and the Dreamers Gate sculpture, or drive past.
Collector is a village of about 300 people on the Federal Highway between Goulburn and Canberra, a couple of minutes off the road and roughly 30 minutes from either. It has a weir with a small picnic area, a large metal sculpture on Church Street, and a memorial to a policeman shot by a bushranger in 1865. There is no accommodation and no petrol, so it works as a leg-stretch, not a stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No petrol in Collector: the store is closed. Fill up in Goulburn or Canberra before you turn off.
- No accommodation, no supermarket and no ATM: bring water and cash if you plan to buy anything.
- Do not swim in the weir.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the highway at dawn and dusk: slow down on the Federal Highway.
- Summer heat is the real risk: 35 °C+ days with no shade at the picnic area.
Very low crime; the real risks are the highway (kangaroos at dawn and dusk, trucks), summer heat with no shade, and running out of fuel because there is no petrol in town.
