- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Berkeley sits across the bay from San Francisco, 20–30 minutes by BART from downtown SF, and is a university town first: the UC Berkeley campus, BAMPFA, and a walkable downtown core of Shattuck and Telegraph. It is not a substitute for San Francisco and does not need to be. Treat it as a one- or two-night base in the East Bay, or a half-day side trip by train, and spend the rest of your time on Oakland and the bay.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
Walk downtown and around campus: it is faster than driving and parking is scarce and expensive. BART covers Oakland, San Francisco and the airports from three stations (Ashby, Downtown Berkeley, North Berkeley); Downtown Berkeley is the one to use. AC Transit fills the gaps, including the 51B to Fourth Street and Rockridge. Bay Wheels bike share has docks around town; bicycle theft is a real problem, so lock the frame and front wheel.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 30–40 min
BART from Downtown Berkeley to Embarcadero or Powell St
The main reason to base here: no bridge traffic, no parking. Trains every 15–20 min.
Oakland
goDoor to door: About 15–25 min
BART to 12th St or 19th St, or AC Transit 6/18 to Temescal
Lake Merritt, Jack London Square and better nightlife than Berkeley.
Emeryville
goDoor to door: About 15–20 min
AC Transit 51B or a short rideshare
Bay Street shops and the waterfront; also the Amtrak stop for the region.
Alameda
cautionDoor to door: About 40–50 min
BART to Oakland then AC Transit, or drive
Nice old-town main street and beaches, but the transfer eats the day.
Richmond, California
cautionDoor to door: About 30–45 min
BART to Richmond, then AC Transit
Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front park is the draw; check opening days.
Fremont
skipDoor to door: About 1 h
BART southbound via Oakland
Suburban and far; nothing here beats a Berkeley or Oakland day.
San Leandro
skipDoor to door: About 35–45 min
BART southbound
Only worth it if you are already heading south.
Hayward
skipDoor to door: About 45–55 min
BART southbound
No reason to leave Berkeley for it.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown Berkeley (Shattuck and Center)
Best for a short trip: BART station, campus one block away, restaurants and theaters on foot. Hotel rates are the highest here.
Telegraph Avenue / Southside
Student end of town, cheapest beds and the most casual food; noisier at night and rougher around People's Park.
Fourth Street and the Marina
Quieter, more expensive, good for couples with a car; AC Transit 51B links it to downtown.
North Berkeley / Gourmet Ghetto
Residential and calm, North Berkeley BART nearby, walkable to the Rose Garden and Indian Rock.

Watch out
Safety
- Parking near campus and downtown is hard and costly; garages like Telegraph Channing fill early and street sweeping tickets are issued street by street, sometimes twice on the same block.
- Do not leave anything visible in a parked car, and expect bicycle theft if you lock only the frame.
- Mornings are foggy and cool even in summer; the marina and bay-facing hills are windy.
- Some blocks south of campus and around People's Park are uncomfortable after dark; stick to lit main streets.
