Berkeley
Berkeley, California
Give Berkeley one full day plus a half-day: campus and BAMPFA on foot, then Telegraph or Fourth Street. Two nights if you want Tilden and the hills.
Berkeley sits across the bay from San Francisco, 20–30 minutes by BART from downtown SF, and is a university town first: the UC Berkeley campus, BAMPFA, and a walkable downtown core of Shattuck and Telegraph. It is not a substitute for San Francisco and does not need to be. Treat it as a one- or two-night base in the East Bay, or a half-day side trip by train, and spend the rest of your time on Oakland and the bay.

Get around
Walk downtown and around campus: it is faster than driving and parking is scarce and expensive. BART covers Oakland, San Francisco and the airports from three stations (Ashby, Downtown Berkeley, North Berkeley); Downtown Berkeley is the one to use. AC Transit fills the gaps, including the 51B to Fourth Street and Rockridge. Bay Wheels bike share has docks around town; bicycle theft is a real problem, so lock the frame and front wheel.
See and do
Known for
- University of California, Berkeley campus and Campanile
- BAMPFA (Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive)

Sleep
- Downtown Berkeley (Shattuck and Center)
- Best for a short trip: BART station, campus one block away, restaurants and theaters on foot. Hotel rates are the highest here.
- Telegraph Avenue / Southside
- Student end of town, cheapest beds and the most casual food; noisier at night and rougher around People's Park.
- Fourth Street and the Marina
- Quieter, more expensive, good for couples with a car; AC Transit 51B links it to downtown.
- North Berkeley / Gourmet Ghetto
- Residential and calm, North Berkeley BART nearby, walkable to the Rose Garden and Indian Rock.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking near campus and downtown is hard and costly; garages like Telegraph Channing fill early and street sweeping tickets are issued street by street, sometimes twice on the same block.
- Do not leave anything visible in a parked car, and expect bicycle theft if you lock only the frame.
- Mornings are foggy and cool even in summer; the marina and bay-facing hills are windy.
- Some blocks south of campus and around People's Park are uncomfortable after dark; stick to lit main streets.
Berkeley is a normal US college city: daytime walking is fine, and the real risks are car break-ins, bicycle theft and a few blocks south of campus after dark. Use 911 for emergencies.
