Haifa is Israel's third-largest city and the north's main port, built up the slope of Mount Carmel so that neighbourhoods stack from sea level to ridge. It is the Bahá'í faith's second-holiest city, with the terraced gardens and golden-domed Shrine of the Báb at its centre. Two nights covers the gardens, the German Colony, Hadar's markets and the coast without rushing; the city is calmer and cheaper than Tel Aviv, and the train links both.

Getting around
The Carmelit funicular is the only subway in Israel and links Downtown to Carmel Center through Hadar; it is short but useful for the climb. Metronit BRT lines and regular buses cover the rest, running roughly 05:00–00:00, with a limited Sabbath service that most Israeli cities do not have. Buy a Rav Kav card or pay via the Moovit app. The Rakavlit cable car runs from the bay hub to Technion and the University. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work; the Bat Galim cable car links the promenade to Stella Maris.

Carmel Center
On the ridge: hotels, cafés, the Louis Promenade and sea views; quieter, but you rely on bus or Carmelit to reach downtown.
Bat Galim
Coastal neighbourhood near the beach, the cable car and Bat Galim train station; good for beach time.

Watch out
Safety
- The Bahá'í Gardens are only partly open to walkers: the upper, middle and lower entrances are far apart and the middle level has a dress code; free guided tours run on a set timetable, check it before you go.
- The Carmelit and most buses stop for the Sabbath and Jewish holidays; Haifa keeps a minimal bus service but plan around Friday afternoon to Saturday evening.
- Beach currents on the Mediterranean can be strong; swim where lifeguards are posted.
- Summer heat and humidity on the ridge are real; carry water and walk the gardens early.
