Hamilton, OntarioHamilton

Give Hamilton one full day for the waterfalls and the Royal Botanical Gardens, or two nights if you add the Warplane Heritage Museum and Dundurn Castle.

Hamilton sits at the western tip of Lake Ontario, about an hour from Toronto and an hour from Niagara Falls, so it works as a stop on a Niagara Peninsula loop rather than a destination on its own. The city wraps around the harbour and climbs the Niagara Escarpment — locals call the upper city "the Mountain" — which is where the waterfalls, the Bruce Trail and the Royal Botanical Gardens sit. Most visitors come for a day of green space and industrial-history sights, then move on.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

HSR buses cover the city; downtown service is frequent, outer routes can run every 30–60 minutes on Sundays and holidays. A fare is valid for two hours with transfers. GO Transit trains and buses link Hamilton with Toronto, and transfers between GO and HSR are free when you tap the same card on both. A car makes the waterfalls and the Mountain much easier.

Watch out

Safety

Hamilton is a normal mid-size Canadian city: violent crime is rare, but keep your wits about you downtown at night and lock the car. The real hazards are escarpment trails after rain, winter ice on the access roads and the harbour's cold water.
  • Escarpment access roads ice up in winter and can close during storms; the Sherman Access switches to one-way at rush hour.
  • Downtown has many one-way streets — check which street you need before you turn.
  • Some street names repeat across the former towns (Dundas, Stoney Creek, Ancaster) that merged into Hamilton.
