Hamilton sits at the western tip of Lake Ontario, about an hour from Toronto and an hour from Niagara Falls, so it works as a stop on a Niagara Peninsula loop rather than a destination on its own. The city wraps around the harbour and climbs the Niagara Escarpment — locals call the upper city "the Mountain" — which is where the waterfalls, the Bruce Trail and the Royal Botanical Gardens sit. Most visitors come for a day of green space and industrial-history sights, then move on.

Get around
HSR buses cover the city; downtown service is frequent, outer routes can run every 30–60 minutes on Sundays and holidays. A fare is valid for two hours with transfers. GO Transit trains and buses link Hamilton with Toronto, and transfers between GO and HSR are free when you tap the same card on both. A car makes the waterfalls and the Mountain much easier.
