Jumunjin주문진

Half a day is enough: see the fish market, walk the breakwater, eat fresh squid and leave. Not a base — sleep in Gangneung.

Jumunjin is a working fishing port on the east coast of Gangwon, 20 minutes north of Gangneung. Its main draw is the Jumunjin Fish Market, one of the largest on the east coast, and the breakwater (Radiator) that featured in the film Kilimanjaro. The beach is shallow and family-friendly. Most travellers visit as a short stop between Gangneung and Yangyang, not as a destination on its own.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • South Korea ↗Check K-ETA and visa status on the official sites before you fly; the list of nationalities exempted from registering online changes year by year.
  • South Korea ↗Google Maps gives poor walking and driving directions in Korea; use Naver Map or Kakao Map for routes.
  • South Korea ↗Buy a T-money card (or use a phone-based transit pass) for subway and buses; it also pays at convenience stores and many taxis.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The main risks are slippery rocks on the breakwater and summer heat. No pickpocketing concerns.
  • The fish market closes by 18:00; go in the morning for the best selection and activity.
  • Breakwater (Radiator) can be slippery when wet; no guardrails in sections.
  • No English menus at many seafood restaurants — point at what you want.
  • Jumunjin Beach has lifeguards only in peak summer (Jul–Aug).
