Ruka is Finland's second-busiest ski resort, a compact pedestrian village on a 492 m hill about 23 km north of Kuusamo. The season runs over 200 days — early October to early May — and summer brings the Karhunkierros trail and the gondola. Three to four nights covers skiing or hiking without rushing; two nights is the minimum that justifies the transfer.

Getting around

The pedestrian village is walkable. The gondola runs daily in winter (about 09:30–23:00) and summer (about 10:00–21:00). A ski bus runs late Nov–end Apr, free with a valid lift pass or ski gear; single tickets sold. Two weekday coaches link Kuusamo and Ruka, plus a dial-a-ride service booked through the Matkahuolto app.

Watch out

Safety

Ruka is a safe, small resort. The real risks are cold (below −30 °C), unmarked terrain and seasonal opening hours: check the forecast and book peak-week services ahead.
  • Winter temperatures can drop below −30 °C: layer up and check the forecast before long outings.
  • Auroras need clear, dark skies — check the forecast rather than booking a single night.
  • Off-piste and unmarked terrain is risky; stay on marked trails in the nature reserve.
  • Many restaurants and rentals run seasonal hours: book ski passes and lessons ahead in peak weeks.
