- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Sacramento is California's capital and its oldest incorporated city, built where the Sacramento and American rivers meet. The Gold Rush core survives as Old Sacramento, a walkable grid of 1850s storefronts, the state railroad museum and the riverfront, and the modern city around it is a government, university and farm-to-fork food town with a slower pace than Los Angeles or San Francisco. Most of what a visitor wants sits within about 3 km of the Capitol, so two nights on foot beats a driving tour.

Getting around
Downtown, Midtown and Old Sacramento are a flat, tree-shaded grid: walk or use the Sacramento RT light rail (Gold Line through downtown, Green Line to the Richards Blvd bus station) and local buses. Rideshares cover the gaps. A car is only needed for Folsom, the Gold Country foothills or the airport at odd hours; parking downtown is metered and pricey.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown and Capitol area
Walk to the Capitol, K Street and the arena; business hotels, quiet at night.
Old Sacramento
Riverfront and railroad museum at the door; thin dining after dark, some train noise.
Midtown
Grid of cafés, bars and restaurants along J and K streets; 15–25 min walk or a short rideshare to the Capitol.
Natomas / airport corridor
Cheaper chain hotels near SMF; only worth it for an early flight, 15–20 min drive from downtown.

- Place pages with verified hours (Railroad Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Capitol tours) and eat pages with last orders.
- Heat and fog fixtures so summer and winter arrivals get different default plans.
