Sacramento is California's capital and its oldest incorporated city, built where the Sacramento and American rivers meet. The Gold Rush core survives as Old Sacramento, a walkable grid of 1850s storefronts, the state railroad museum and the riverfront, and the modern city around it is a government, university and farm-to-fork food town with a slower pace than Los Angeles or San Francisco. Most of what a visitor wants sits within about 3 km of the Capitol, so two nights on foot beats a driving tour.

Get around
Downtown, Midtown and Old Sacramento are a flat, tree-shaded grid: walk or use the Sacramento RT light rail (Gold Line through downtown, Green Line to the Richards Blvd bus station) and local buses. Rideshares cover the gaps. A car is only needed for Folsom, the Gold Country foothills or the airport at odd hours; parking downtown is metered and pricey.
