• Rainy season Jun–Sep brings heavy afternoon rain, floods and landslides on mountain roads; Sep–Oct rainfall is at its most extreme.
• Winter snow and landslides can close high roads: check conditions and carry chains if driving.
• Border areas near Myanmar: carry your passport, stay on marked routes and check current advisories before Ruili or cross-border trips.
• Altitude: most towns are 1,200–2,000 m, but the Nujiang canyon and Gaoligong passes climb much higher — pace the first day.
• English is limited outside hotels; have your address in Chinese and a translation app offline.
• Payments run on Alipay or WeChat Pay; set one up before you arrive, as cash is awkward outside banks.
