Útila is the smallest of the three main Bay Islands and the cheapest place in the Caribbean to learn to dive, with more new certifications per year than anywhere else in the region. The town is walkable, English is widely spoken, and everything beyond diving — a jungle plane wreck, a hilltop view, a canal to kayak — fills a spare afternoon. Come for the course, not for beaches.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk everywhere. Tuk-tuks run the main road for about US$1–3. Bikes, scooters and ATVs can be rented in town at high rates; roads are narrow and some drivers are fast, so ride defensively.

Watch out

Safety

Much safer than the mainland, with little violent crime; the real risks are card cloning at ATMs, late-night snatch thefts from people who have been drinking, sand flies and fast traffic on narrow roads.
  • ATM card cloning is a known problem on the island: withdraw inside the bank with your passport instead.
  • ATMs run out of cash and cap withdrawals at about L4,000; plan a buffer.
  • Sand flies are worst at dawn, dusk and when there is no breeze — most dive shops board boats from docks, not beaches.
  • Card payments carry an 8–10% surcharge at many places; bring cash and expect torn or over-US$20 bills to be refused.
  • Freshwater caves on the east shore have killed people who went deep: only enter with two waterproof torches and a guide.
