Wivenhoe is a small Essex port town on the tidal River Colne, 7,300 people, a compact quayside and narrow streets of independent shops and pubs. Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: station to quay is about 10 min. Buses S1 and 87 link Wivenhoe with Colchester and the university; National Cycle Network Route 51 runs traffic-free along the Colne from Colchester. A car is only useful for Wivenhoe Park, Cockaynes Wood and Wyvernwood.

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the tidal river, unlit lanes after dark and the last train back to Colchester or London.
  • The River Colne is tidal with mud and fast water: stay on the quay, not the mud.
  • Trains stop in the early mornings, daytimes and late evenings only; there are no overnight services, so check the last train back.
  • Small-town hours: several shops and cafés close early or shut on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Village pubs and delis may be card-only or cash-only: ask before ordering.
