Wivenhoe is a small Essex port town on the tidal River Colne, 7,300 people, a compact quayside and narrow streets of independent shops and pubs. Trains from London Liverpool Street take just over an hour, so it works as a quiet one-night stop or an easy half-day out of Colchester. There is no big-ticket sight: the point is the river, the streets and the food.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: station to quay is about 10 min. Buses S1 and 87 link Wivenhoe with Colchester and the university; National Cycle Network Route 51 runs traffic-free along the Colne from Colchester. A car is only useful for Wivenhoe Park, Cockaynes Wood and Wyvernwood.
