Churchill Falls

Give Churchill Falls one night as a fuel-and-bed stop on the Trans-Labrador Highway; the dam tour is the only reason to stay two.

Churchill Falls is a company town of about 700 people built around a 5.4-gigawatt underground hydro station, the third-largest in North America. It sits on paved Route 500, 243 km from Labrador City and 288 km from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, with one hotel, one restaurant, one fuel stop and no public transport. Almost everyone arrives by car and leaves the next morning.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

No public transport. The village is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end, and the hotel shuttles guests to the airport. You need your own car for the reservoir viewpoint, the trailhead and the dam; fuel up at the Ultramar station on John Cabot Street before heading out on Route 500.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Churchill Falls Generating Station

go

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Drive or join the hotel shuttle to the station; tours must be booked in advance

The reason the town exists: eleven turbines about 300 m underground. Book before you arrive or you may not get in.

Reservoir Panoramic Viewpoint

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive north of the village on the south shore road

Short stop with the best view of the Churchill Reservoir; pair it with the falls trail.

The Falls and Walking Trail

go

Door to door: Half a day for the full 17 km

Drive past Brinco Bridge, then walk about 20 min to the falls

Bring a bell or whistle for bears. The full trail is long; the falls section is the payoff.

Labrador City and Wabush

overnight

Door to door: About 3 h

Drive west on Route 500, 243 km (151 mi)

Too far to return the same day with sightseeing; sleep there or here, not both.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay

overnight

Door to door: About 3.5 h

Drive east on Route 500, 288 km (179 mi)

The next real service town east; plan fuel and food around it.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town Centre (Donald Gordon Centre)

Everything in one building: hotel, restaurant, grocery, pool, arena, library, bank. Book ahead; this is the only full-service bed.

John Cabot Street and Ressegieu Drive

Small lodges and houses a short walk from the centre; check whether the kitchen is open before you commit.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are wildlife, weather and distance. Tell someone your route before driving Route 500, carry water and a spare, and treat every bear sighting as a reason to back away.
  • Cell signal dies a few kilometres outside town; rent a satellite phone if you are driving Route 500 or 510.
  • Black bears are common in summer and fall. Walk the trails with bells or a whistle and keep food sealed.
  • Water levels in the Churchill River change without warning; check before boating or fishing.
  • There is no automotive repair garage in town. Arrive with your vehicle in order.
  • No organised campsites or RV sites; only a dump station for travellers.
