Athy is a market and garrison town on the River Barrow, 72 km southwest of Dublin and 45 min by train from Heuston. The compact centre holds a 15th-century bridge castle, a canal harbour and the Shackleton Museum; the high crosses, gardens and castle hotels sit in the surrounding countryside and need wheels. Most travellers use it as a stop between Dublin, Kildare and Kilkenny rather than a base.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes. Trains run every 2–3 hours from Dublin Heuston via Kildare, 45 min, and continue to Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford. GoAhead Commuter 130 links Naas via Kilcullen, 40 min, 3–4 times a day. For Burtown Gardens, Moone, Castledermot or Ballyadams you need a car, a bike or a taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Athy is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are dark rural roads, unlit canal and river banks, and late-night noise around Leinster St pubs.
  • White's Castle is a private dwelling with no tours: view it from the bridge.
  • Woodstock Castle is fenced off with no interior access.
  • Moone High Cross sits in private grounds and has had no public access in recent years: check before you drive out.
  • Burtown House and Gardens and the Quaker Museum keep limited hours (check before travelling).
  • Rural roads are narrow and unlit; drive on the left and watch for cyclists and tractors.
