Athy is a market and garrison town on the River Barrow, 72 km southwest of Dublin and 45 min by train from Heuston. The compact centre holds a 15th-century bridge castle, a canal harbour and the Shackleton Museum; the high crosses, gardens and castle hotels sit in the surrounding countryside and need wheels. Most travellers use it as a stop between Dublin, Kildare and Kilkenny rather than a base.

The centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes. Trains run every 2–3 hours from Dublin Heuston via Kildare, 45 min, and continue to Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford.
