Çavdarhisar is a small high-plateau village 57 km southwest of Kütahya, built over the Roman city of Aizanoi. The Temple of Zeus, the macellum and the stadium sit inside the village itself, so you walk between ruins and houses in minutes. Most travellers see it in half a day; a single night buys you the site at golden hour and an early start before the tour vans arrive.

Getting around

Walk. The village is small and the ruins are inside it: 1 km northwest from the crossroads to the temple and river. A car helps for the wider site and for reaching Kütahya, but you do not need one for Aizanoi itself.

Watch out

Safety

Quiet and low-crime; the real risks are winter roads, patchy phone signal and the last dolmuş leaving before 17:00. Keep small lira notes for the ATM-poor village.
  • Transport back to Kütahya dries up after about 17:00; plan the last dolmuş or arrange a lift.
  • Winter snow can block D240 for days; check the forecast before setting out.
  • Some long-distance buses drop you on the highway, 2 km from the ruins: budget the walk or a taxi.
  • Cash: one ATM in the village; carry lira in small notes.
  • Site information is in Turkish, English and German; little shade, so bring water in summer.
