Prespa is a lake region in the country's far south-west, shared with Albania and Greece, wrapped by Galičica and Pelister national parks. Villages ring the Great Prespa Lake shore, most with a medieval church, a beach and a handful of guesthouses. It is rural, spread out and slow: two nights with your own car covers the island, the frescoes and the beaches without rushing.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: villages sit 5–20 km apart and buses run only a couple of times a day to Resen. Taxis can be hired from Resen, Ohrid or Bitola; agree the fare before you get in. Hitchhiking works but traffic is thin outside summer.

Watch out

Safety

Prespa is quiet and low-crime, and there have been no inter-ethnic incidents here even at the height of national tensions. The real risks are unlit mountain roads, thin phone coverage in the villages and swimming alone at unmarked shore spots.
  • Most village churches are locked: ask locally for the key.
  • The Golem Grad boat runs from Konjsko or Stenje only in season and only with enough passengers: confirm before driving out.
  • The Dolno Dupeni crossing to Greece has been closed for decades; do not plan a route through it.
  • Mountain roads over Galičica are winding with no lighting: drive them in daylight.
  • Bring cash: card machines are rare in the villages.
