Quesnel (say "kwinnel") is a forestry town of about 10,000 on the Fraser River, on the old Cariboo Wagon Road. It is a road-trip pause, not a destination: a museum, a long wooden footbridge over the Fraser, painted fire hydrants, and Barkerville east on Highway 26. Most travellers pass through on Highway 97 or stop one night on the way north.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and Barkerville are spread out and Highway 97 runs through town. BC Transit runs three local bus routes Monday–Saturday (adult fare $1.75, day pass $3.50) plus a Thursday bus to Wells for $5 per trip. Taxis are available; walking works only in the compact centre.

Safety

Quesnel is a small, quiet town and feels safe by day and evening; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 97, wildlife on the road at dusk, and summer wildfire smoke.
  • Winter driving on Highway 97: snow, ice and long gaps between services; check DriveBC before you leave.
  • Fuel and food gaps north and south of town; fill up in Quesnel.
  • Museum closes October to early May; visitor centre is seasonal (late May–early Sep daily 9:00–18:00, otherwise Tue–Sat 9:00–16:00).
  • Wildfire smoke can hit in July and August; check air quality if you have breathing issues.
