Mindo is a 3,000-person town in the Mindo-Nambillo cloud forest, about 2 hours northwest of Quito and roughly 1,200 m lower, so it is warmer and greener than the capital. Birders come for 450-plus species; everyone else comes for waterfalls, tubing, chocolate and butterflies. One night covers the highlights, two nights lets you add a dawn birding walk and a slow afternoon.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. For the waterfalls, take a $1-per-person pickup from the main street or walk the 7 km uphill road. Taxis and pickups cover short hops; agree the fare first. Buses to Quito leave from the terminal by the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Mindo is a small, low-crime tourist town; the real risks are slippery trails, fast river water and unlicensed tubing operators. Use 911 for emergencies and keep a copy of your passport.
  • Buy your return bus ticket the moment you arrive, or you may not get a seat back the same day.
  • The waterfall trail is steep and slippery after rain: shoes with grip, and carry water.
  • Tubing and the water slide are only safe at the right river level: ask a local operator, not a shop tout.
  • Nights are cool and damp at this altitude; bring a light rain shell even in the dry season.
