Düsseldorf

Give Düsseldorf 2 nights: one for the Altstadt and Rhine promenade, one for Königsallee, the Japanese quarter and a Benrath half-day. Skip it as a base if Cologne is your Rhine stop.

Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German capital of fashion, with the country's highest concentration of professional services, media and creative firms. It is also one of Europe's largest Japanese business communities, which shows in the food. The tourist core is compact and walkable: Altstadt, Carlstadt, Unterbilk and the Hafen sit within about 3 km along the Rhine. Two nights covers it; add a third for Benrath Palace or a trade fair.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

Rheinbahn runs the tram, Stadtbahn, bus and S-Bahn network under the VRR fare system. All trips inside Düsseldorf, the airport included, are price category A. Validate your ticket in the stamping machine before you board: an unstamped ticket is treated as no ticket. The centre is small enough to walk between the Altstadt, the Kö and the Hafen. Bikes rent from the Radstation at the Hauptbahnhof or through Nextbike. Uber, Bolt and Free Now all operate.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Neuss

go

Door to door: About 30 min

S-Bahn or tram from the Hauptbahnhof, about 15–20 min

Small old town and the Rhine; a half-day, not a full one.

Krefeld

go

Door to door: About 45 min

RE or RB from the Hauptbahnhof, about 30 min

Silk and design museums; pair with a walk in the centre.

Mönchengladbach

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

RE from the Hauptbahnhof, about 30 min

Worth it mainly for the football or the abbey; otherwise thin.

Door to door: About 1 h

RE or ICE from the Hauptbahnhof, 25–35 min

The cathedral and the museums; go early, the centre is busy by noon.

Weeze

skip

Door to door: About 1.5 h

RE 10 to Weeze, then shuttle SW1

Only if you fly from NRN; nothing else there.

Kleve

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

RE to Kleve via Krefeld, about 1 h 30 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep one night.

Kevelaer

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

RE to Kevelaer, about 1 h 20 min

Pilgrimage town; a long half-day.

Emmerich am Rhein

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

RE 5 toward Wesel, about 1 h 30 min

Rhine border town; better as a stop on a river route.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Altstadt and Carlstadt

Walk to the Rhine, the bars and the Kö; noisiest on weekend nights, so ask for a courtyard room.

Stadtmitte around the Hauptbahnhof

Cheapest beds and best train links; the blocks nearest the station are the least pleasant, and it improves as you walk toward the Kö.

Unterbilk and Hafen

Quieter, modern, 15–20 min walk from the Altstadt; good for design hotels and riverside runs.

Neuss (across the Rhine)

Cheaper rooms with a direct S-Bahn or tram hop into the centre; use it only if you are price-driven.

Watch out

Safety

Düsseldorf is a safe big city by day and on the main streets at night. The real risks are the Hauptbahnhof blocks after dark, pickpockets in the Altstadt on weekend nights, and the ticket fine if you forget to stamp your Rheinbahn ticket.
  • Validate every Rheinbahn and regional ticket before boarding; inspectors fine on the spot and language is not an excuse.
  • Do not order Kölsch in Düsseldorf: order Alt. The Cologne rivalry is real, if mostly playful.
  • Spell the city with the umlaut or as Duesseldorf; without it the name reads as 'village of fools'.
  • The Theodor-Heuss-Brücke (B 7) has a 3.5 t weight limit from February 2026; check your route if driving a heavy vehicle.
  • The centre is an environmental zone: cars need a pollution sticker.
  • Trade fairs (Messe) fill every hotel in the city; check the fair calendar before you book.
