Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German capital of fashion, with the country's highest concentration of professional services, media and creative firms. It is also one of Europe's largest Japanese business communities, which shows in the food. The tourist core is compact and walkable: Altstadt, Carlstadt, Unterbilk and the Hafen sit within about 3 km along the Rhine. Two nights covers it; add a third for Benrath Palace or a trade fair.

Get around
Rheinbahn runs the tram, Stadtbahn, bus and S-Bahn network under the VRR fare system. All trips inside Düsseldorf, the airport included, are price category A. Validate your ticket in the stamping machine before you board: an unstamped ticket is treated as no ticket. The centre is small enough to walk between the Altstadt, the Kö and the Hafen. Bikes rent from the Radstation at the Hauptbahnhof or through Nextbike. Uber, Bolt and Free Now all operate.

- The Theodor-Heuss-Brücke (B 7) has a 3.5 t weight limit from February 2026; check your route if driving a heavy vehicle.
- The centre is an environmental zone: cars need a pollution sticker.

Düsseldorf is a safe big city by day and on the main streets at night. The real risks are the Hauptbahnhof blocks after dark, pickpockets in the Altstadt on weekend nights, and the ticket fine if you forget to stamp your Rheinbahn ticket.
