- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Chantilly is a Dulles-corridor suburb in Fairfax County, Virginia, not a sightseeing town. Its one heavyweight draw is the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center — free entry, paid parking, a 15-minute drive from the airport. Everything else is parks, a Civil War battlefield and strip-mall dining, so you need a car and a reason to be here.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 5–15 min apart along Route 28 and US-50, and pavements are patchy. Without a car, Fairfax Connector buses cover the basics — 983 to the Udvar-Hazy Center and Dulles Airport, 650 toward the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station, 901 to the Silver Line at Herndon. Rideshare is easy but surge-priced at airport peaks.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door

Door to door: 40–50 min
Car about 20 min, or Fairfax Connector 650 to Vienna/Fairfax-GMU
Small downtown with cafés and a rail trail.
Door to door: 40–50 min
Car about 25 min via I-66

Door to door: 35–45 min
Car about 20 min via US-50
More dining and shopping than Chantilly itself.
Door to door: 1–1.25 h
Car about 35 min via I-66, or bus to Metro
Better as a separate base than a day trip.
Mount Vernon
cautionDoor to door: 1.25–1.5 h
Car about 50 min via the Beltway
Long return trip; go early and allow half a day on site.
Lorton
cautionDoor to door: 1 h
Car about 40 min via I-95
Workhouse Arts Center and Occoquan are the reasons to go.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Dulles/Route 28 corridor (Corsair Ct, Centerview Dr, Westfax Dr)
Airport hotels with free shuttles; best for one night or a layover.
Metrotech Dr / Chantilly Crossing
Walkable cluster of chain hotels, groceries and fast food; the most practical base without a car.
Westfields (Conference Center Dr)
Business-hotel and conference zone; quiet at weekends, needs a car for everything.

Watch out
Safety
- Almost nothing is walkable between clusters; plan each hop by car, bus or rideshare.
- Udvar-Hazy parking is paid per vehicle and the lot fills on weekend afternoons — arrive at opening.
- The museum is free but the IMAX theatre and some simulators are ticketed separately.
- Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms and heavy Beltway/Dulles Toll Road traffic; build in slack before a flight.
