Fort Nelson is a service town of about 3,400 people at Mile 300 of the Alaska Highway, 450 km north of Fort St. John and 600 km southeast of Watson Lake. It exists for drivers: fuel, beds, food and the story of the road built in 1942. Sights take half a day; the real reason to stop is the drive either side of it.

Getting around

You need a car or a taxi. The town is about 3 km across and the highway strip has no useful bus service. Fort Nelson Cab Company runs local trips (check the fare when you call). Fuel up here before the 200 km run west to Muncho Lake, where services are thin.

Watch out

Safety

A safe small town; the real hazards are the drive and the cold. Carry water, fuel before the gaps, and watch for wildlife on Highway 97 at dawn and dusk.
  • Distances are the risk, not crime: the next fuel west is about 200 km, and wildlife (moose, bears) crosses Highway 97 at dusk and dawn.
  • Winter temperatures fall below −30 °C; rental cars here may not carry winter tyres or a block heater — ask before you book a winter drive.
  • Many motels and restaurants cut hours or close in the off-season (Oct–Apr): call ahead if you are arriving late.
  • Cell coverage drops quickly outside town on the Alaska Highway.
