Fort Nelson
One night, not two: the Alaska Highway museum and a walk are the town. Stop here to break the Fort St. John–Watson Lake drive, or skip if you fly.
Fort Nelson is a service town of about 3,400 people at Mile 300 of the Alaska Highway, 450 km north of Fort St. John and 600 km southeast of Watson Lake. It exists for drivers: fuel, beds, food and the story of the road built in 1942. Sights take half a day; the real reason to stop is the drive either side of it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are the risk, not crime: the next fuel west is about 200 km, and wildlife (moose, bears) crosses Highway 97 at dusk and dawn.
- Winter temperatures fall below −30 °C; rental cars here may not carry winter tyres or a block heater — ask before you book a winter drive.
- Many motels and restaurants cut hours or close in the off-season (Oct–Apr): call ahead if you are arriving late.
- Cell coverage drops quickly outside town on the Alaska Highway.
A safe small town; the real hazards are the drive and the cold. Carry water, fuel before the gaps, and watch for wildlife on Highway 97 at dawn and dusk.
