Ajmer is a working Rajasthani city of about 540,000 people, 135 km west of Jaipur, built around the shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Pilgrims come for the Dargah; most other travellers pass through on the way to Pushkar, 14 km away. The old core is walkable, the sights are few and close together, and one night covers it — unless you time your visit to the Urs, when the city fills and beds vanish.

Getting around

The centre is small: Dargah Bazaar is about 15 minutes on foot from Ajmer Junction and Ana Sagar about 30. Cycle rickshaws, autorickshaws and shared tempos cover the rest; tempos between the bus stand and railway station were around ₹10 in 2019, so expect a little more in 2026 (check). Agree the fare before you get in, and expect drivers to push a Pushkar side trip.

Watch out

Safety

Ajmer is generally safe for tourists by day; the real risks are heat, traffic, aggressive touting around the Dargah and petty theft in crowded bazaars. Women report stares in the old core — cover up at the shrine and keep to lit streets after dark.
  • Dargah etiquette: heads covered for men and women, shoulders covered for women; many women prefer not to enter in western dress.
  • Shoe-watch touts and persistent begging in Dargah Bazaar — pay a small fixed amount or carry your shoes.
  • Urs season: rooms sell out 2–3 months ahead and prices jump.
  • Summer heat: April–June regularly passes 40 °C; do sights before 10:00 and after 17:00.
  • Autorickshaw drivers quoting Pushkar instead of your destination, and meters that are never used.
