Dimona

Skip Dimona unless you have a specific reason to visit the Black Hebrew community or the Mamshit ruins: half a day is enough, and the town itself offers little else.

Dimona is a small desert town in the northeastern Negev, best known for its Black Hebrew Israelite community and the nearby Mamshit Nabatean ruins. The town itself is quiet and spread out, with limited sights and services. Most travellers use it as a short stop between Beer Sheva and the Dead Sea or Eilat.

Watch out

Safety

Dimona is generally safe, but the desert heat is the main risk: carry water, sun protection and a hat. The nuclear facility is off-limits; do not photograph or approach it.
  • The railway station is the least busy in Israel: check the schedule in advance; only about three trains per day each way.
  • The nuclear research facility is not visible from the town; do not attempt to approach it.
  • Friday afternoon to Saturday evening (Shabbat) public transport stops in most of Israel, including Dimona.
