Adana is a working agricultural and industrial city on the Seyhan River, 50 km from the Mediterranean, and it is a food city more than a sight city. The traveller core is compact around Tepebağ old town: a Roman bridge, a 16th-century mosque complex, a clock tower and a strong archaeology museum. Most trips pass through on the way to Mersin, Tarsus or Gaziantep, or stop for one night to eat Adana kebab where it comes from.

Getting around

The old town is walkable. City buses and dolmuş cover the rest; the single metro line runs 14 km across the centre (Vilayet stop for the railway station) and most visitors never use it. Taxis are metered and cheap by European standards.

Watch out

Safety

Adana is a normal Turkish big city: violent crime against visitors is rare, but take the usual care at night around the station, agree taxi fares or insist on the meter, and treat summer heat and earthquake awareness as the real risks.
  • Summer heat and humidity: do the old town before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Regional trains to Mersin and Tarsus are suspended for tunnel works until 2026: use buses.
  • Adana sits in an earthquake zone; the 2023 quakes damaged buildings here. Know your exit route in any hotel.
  • Old-town kebab places sit around the rim, not in the middle: expect a short walk or taxi.
