  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Weihai is a small, clean Shandong Peninsula port city on the Yellow Sea, 3 h 30 min by high-speed rail from Qingdao. It is a summer beach and seafood stop, not a sightseeing city: Liugong Island and the Sino-Japanese War history are the core, the coast is the rest. Winter is cold and windy, and most beach facilities shut from October.

Watch out

Safety

Weihai is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are cold sea wind, strong currents at unpatrolled beaches, and seasonal closures that leave you with nothing to do outside summer.
  • The Liugong Island ferry stops running in the late afternoon: last boat back is around 18:30, so do not arrive late.
  • Beach swimming and many coastal facilities are seasonal; outside summer expect empty sand and closed kiosks.
  • Winter wind off the sea is strong and the temperature drops well below freezing: pack accordingly.
  • English is limited outside hotels; have your address in Chinese characters.
