Chester is a compact walled city on the River Dee, the county town of Cheshire and the last big English stop before north Wales. Two thousand years of layers sit inside a 2-mile circuit: Roman walls and amphitheatre, the two-tier Rows, a cathedral and a racecourse on the old Roman harbour. The centre is small enough to cover on foot in a day, which is why most trips treat it as a day trip or a single overnight from Liverpool or Manchester rather than a whole holiday.

Getting around

Walk. The walled centre is about 1 mile across and the wall circuit takes 1–1.5 h at an easy pace. Chester station is about 1 mile northeast of the centre; local buses leave from the interchange at Gorse Stacks. Bache is a small platform halt north of the city on the Liverpool line, useful for the zoo but with no lifts. Taxis wait outside the station.

Safety

Chester is a low-crime, walkable city; the real risks are uneven wall and Rows steps, riverbank paths after dark, and race-day crowds around the bars.
  • Race days fill the city centre: pubs and bars get packed and hotel prices jump, so check the racecourse fixture list before booking.
  • The Rows are two levels of shops with steps and narrow passages; some sections are not step-free.
  • The bus interchange is open on both sides, so wind and rain sweep through the stands; the departure boards show only the next ten minutes.
  • Cross-border buses: English and Welsh concessionary passes are only valid on their own side of the border.
  • Summer weekends and school holidays make the wall and Eastgate Clock area crowded; go before 10:00.
