Two thousand years of layers sit inside a 2-mile circuit: Roman walls and amphitheatre, the two-tier Rows, a cathedral and a racecourse on the old Roman harbour. The centre is small enough to cover on foot in a day, which is why most trips treat it as a day trip or a single overnight from Liverpool or Manchester rather than a whole holiday.

Get around
Walk. The walled centre is about 1 mile across and the wall circuit takes 1–1.5 h at an easy pace. Chester station is about 1 mile northeast of the centre; local buses leave from the interchange at Gorse Stacks. Bache is a small platform halt north of the city on the Liverpool line, useful for the zoo but with no lifts. Taxis wait outside the station.
