MoreheadMorehead, Kentucky

Give Morehead one night as an I-64 stop for Cave Run Lake and the folk art center, or skip it if you are not driving.

Morehead is a small college town in the Kentucky Appalachians, about an hour from Lexington and an hour from Huntington, West Virginia, on I-64. It is a base for Cave Run Lake, the Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest, not a stand-alone sightseeing city. A car is needed to see anything beyond downtown.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights, the lake and the gorge are spread out and there is no useful local bus for visitors. Downtown is walkable once parked. I-64 runs north of town, US-60 is the main east-west street, and KY-32 links downtown to the interstate.

Watch out

Safety

Morehead is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are driving I-64 in ice or fog, summer heat on trails, and thin cell coverage in the national forest. Lock your car at trailheads.
  • No car means no lake, no gorge and no trailheads: plan a rental or drive in.
  • Cell signal drops in parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest; download offline maps.
  • Summer heat and humidity in the valleys; carry water on any hike.
  • Winter ice and fog on I-64 and KY-32 can close or slow the drive.
