Mtwara is a southern port town built for a groundnut scheme that never happened, so it stayed low and spread out. Travellers come for two things: diving and snorkelling around Mnazi Bay, and Makonde carving, which is still made here. It is a working Tanzanian town first, a beach destination second, and it pairs with Mikindani next door rather than replacing it.

Getting around

The town is spread out, so plan on bajaji (three-wheel taxi) or pikipiki (motorbike taxi) for anything beyond one neighbourhood. Bicycles can be hired from the market area for a few thousand shillings a day. Walking works in daylight between the market, bus stand and Bima; after dark take a vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

Mtwara is generally a safe town; the real risk is being on an empty residential street after dark. If people are around it is usually fine, if it is deserted take a bajaji or taxi.
  • Take a vehicle after dark, especially in residential streets away from the centre.
  • The Dar es Salaam road can flood in the rainy season: journeys get much longer, not cancelled.
  • Bus operators on the Dar route change often; buy at the station on the day and pick a four-seat-row bus.
  • Diving and boat trips depend on sea conditions and operator availability — confirm before you build a day around it.
