Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Slovakia ↗Slovakia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Slovakia ↗Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.
  • Slovakia ↗Many high trails in Tatra National Park close seasonally (roughly November to mid-June); check the park's current closures before planning a hike.

Levoča is a walled Renaissance town on the Spiš heritage circuit, 25 km east of Poprad and 8 km north of the main Košice–Bratislava rail line. Its UNESCO-listed centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon, and St James church holds the tallest wooden altar in the world, carved by Master Paul. Most travellers see it in a day; one night lets you add Mariánska hora and Spiš Castle.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic centre is car-free in effect and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses link the station area with the centre; taxis are short-hop. A car helps only for Spiš Castle, Žehra and the Levoča Hills.

Bus or car west on the E50

Base for the Tatras; easy onward link by rail.

Kežmarok

Bus or car via Poprad

Better as a stop en route to the Tatras than a return trip.

Stará Ľubovňa

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Bus or car north-east

Castle and open-air museum; check bus times, they are sparse.

Spišský Štvrtok

skip

Door to door: About 40 min

Bus or car south-east

Only worth it if you are already driving the Spiš loop.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Main square (Námestie Majstra Pavla)

Hotels in Renaissance houses; everything on foot, but evening noise on event weekends.

Kláštorská Street

Just behind the square; guesthouses and pensions, 3–5 min walk in.

Near the bus and rail stations

Cheaper and practical with bags, but a 10–15 min walk to the walls.

Watch out

Safety

Levoča is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are uneven pavements and steps in the dark, quiet streets after 20:30, and winter ice on the walk up to Mariánska hora.
  • The town is very quiet after about 20:30: eat before then or plan a late arrival.
  • St James church is a working parish church: entry is by ticket from the shop opposite the main door, cash only, and it closes outside service and tour times.
  • Master Paul's House is closed for renovation; the exhibition has moved to the Old Minorite Monastery, 38 Kláštorská Street.
  • Some hotels and restaurants close or cut hours off season: confirm before a winter booking.
  • The rail station is small with few trains; most arrivals come by bus or via Spišská Nová Ves.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Oct · avoid Nov–Mar (cold, short days, some sights shut) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for TAT and KSC: last bus and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: main square, St James and Master Paul, the walls and gates, Mariánska hora.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (St James church, Spiš Museum, Old Minorite Monastery, town hall tower) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Event fixtures for the June pilgrimage, August Days of Master Paul and the October festival so gates A–D can go green.
