Ahmedabad is India's seventh-largest city and the commercial hub of Gujarat, 30 km south of the state capital Gandhinagar. The old Walled City — Bhadra Fort, the pol lanes, Jama Masjid and the Sidi Saiyyed mosque — is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the reason to come. Two nights covers the old city on foot plus the Sabarmati riverfront and Gandhi's ashram; three nights adds Adalaj Stepwell and a Gandhinagar or Modhera day trip. Winter (Nov–Feb) is the only comfortable season; May peaks near 42°C and the monsoon floods the streets in July–August.

Getting around

AMTS city buses and the BRTS (Janmarg) run about 06:00–23:00; BRTS line 1000 links the airport to Karnavati Club with a maximum fare of ₹50 (check). Autos are metered in theory but quote a price — agree before you get in. Ride-hailing apps work across the city. The old city is best on foot; distances between zones are 5–15 km and traffic is slow.

Safety

Ahmedabad is generally safe for visitors, including solo women in the daytime. The real risks are heatstroke in summer, monsoon flooding, and auto drivers or touts quoting inflated fares: agree the price first and use the prepaid airport booth.
  • Summer heat: May afternoons reach 42°C+; plan indoor or early-morning sightseeing.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Aug) brings street flooding and cancelled trains.
  • Agree auto fares before boarding; use the airport prepaid booth.
  • Touts at the airport and railway station offer 'help' for a fee.
