Drymen is a village of about 830 people inside Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, 4 miles from the east shore of the loch. It is the first real village on the West Highland Way after Milngavie, so most visitors are walkers breaking stage 1, or drivers using it as a quiet, cheaper base for the loch's east side. There is little to see in the village itself: the draw is the walking, the glen and the distillery south of it.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 10 minutes. For the glen, the loch shore and the distillery you need a car, a bike or a taxi; buses are limited to the McColls 309 route.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are wet, steep ground at Finnich Glen, fast traffic on the A811 and A809, and weather that turns on the hills.
  • Buses are infrequent: the 309 runs roughly every 90 min from Balloch via Drymen to Balmaha, so check the last return before you set out.
  • Finnich Glen is reached down a steep staircase that is slippery when wet; the glen and its steps have been damaged by heavy footfall and access can be restricted.
  • Buchanan Castle is a fenced-off ruin on unstable ground: view it from the lane, do not enter.
  • Catter Law is on private land and has been much altered; there is no public access.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G at best in the village and on approach roads; expect gaps on the walking routes.
