Trawas

Skip unless you have a car and want a quiet mountain afternoon: 2–3 hours from Surabaya for a waterfall, a temple and pine views.

Trawas is a small district on the slope of Mount Welirang, 1,150 m above sea level, about 1.5 hours by car from Surabaya. Surabayanese come for weekend retreats; visitors with a car can see the Dlundung Waterfall and Jolotundo Temple in half a day. Public transport is absent, so a car is essential.

Watch out

Safety

The main risk is the steep road to Trawas: drive carefully, check your vehicle, and avoid night driving in rain. Otherwise, the area is safe for tourists.
  • The road from Gempol to Trawas is very steep (over 45 degrees in places); check your car's brakes and cooling system before driving.
  • Rain makes the steep road slippery; avoid driving after dark in wet weather.
  • Jolotundo Temple may have limited opening hours; check locally.
