Morogoro sits at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, about 2.5 hours by road or 2 hours by the new SGR train from Dar es Salaam. It is a working regional capital with a German colonial core, a huge market and hiking access, not a resort town. Most travellers use it for one night or as a launch point for mountain walks.

Getting around

Daladalas (minibuses) run the local routes from the central stand, leaving when full; taxis are plentiful and metered by negotiation. Walking works downtown in daylight. Msamvu bus terminal is a 10-minute dala-dala ride from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Morogoro is generally calm by day, but street crime and pickpocketing happen around markets and after dark. Take taxis at night, keep valuables out of sight and use the 112 emergency line.
  • Do not walk on major roads or to outlying bars after dark; take a taxi.
  • Avoid driving out of Dar es Salaam 16:00–19:00 and into it before 09:00 — commuter traffic.
  • The Main Market is huge and crowded: agree prices before you buy and watch your bag.
  • Some electronics sold in town are counterfeit; ask for the original and bargain.
