  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Champaign-Urbana is a metro of about 220,000 people in central Illinois, built around the University of Illinois campus and split between two downtowns: Champaign, which grew along the railroad, and Urbana, which came first. It is a stop, not a destination week: one or two nights covers the museums, the two downtowns and the campus, and it works as a break on the Chicago–New Orleans Amtrak line. Costs are low by US big-city standards, the grid is flat and easy to cycle, and the main planning job is picking which downtown to sleep in.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

CUMTD buses cover both cities and campus; adult fare is $1.00 and campus routes (1 Yellow, 5 Green, 10 Gold, 12 Teal, 13 Silver, 22 Illini) run every 10–15 min. Hoppers link the two downtowns and campus without a timetable. The grid is flat and good for cycling, but lock properly: bike theft is common. Driving is easy outside campus, where one-way streets and bus-only lanes make loops; avoid the rectangle inside Green, Fourth, Florida/Kirby and Lincoln.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Monticello

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive about 30 min southwest on I-72 and county roads

Small county-seat town with an old courthouse square; pair it with a half-day.

Arcola

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive about 45 min south on I-57

Amish and broomcorn country; the reason to come is the drive and the shops.

Springfield

go

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Drive about 1 h 30 min west on I-72

Lincoln sites and the state capitol; a full day, or sleep one night.

Bloomington-Normal

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive about 50 min northwest on I-74, or Amtrak

Mostly useful as the BMI airport run, not as a sight.

Chicagoovernight

Door to door: About 3 h 30 min

Amtrak from Illinois Terminal, about 3 h

Too far for a return day; go for a night or use it as your arrival city.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Champaign

Around Illinois Terminal: Amtrak, intercity buses and CUMTD in one place. Best for a car-free stop.

Campustown

Green Street next to campus; bars, cheap eats, 10–15 min bus frequency. Noisy on weekends.

Downtown Urbana

Quieter, more restaurants and the arts side; a short bus or bike ride from Champaign.

North Prospect Avenue

Chain hotels and free parking along I-74; only worth it if you have a car.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime university town by US standards; the real risks are winter ice, bike theft and campus-area drink prices. 911 covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Street names repeat across the two cities: four Green Streets, two Washington Streets. Always give the city name.
  • Amtrak to Chicago is often delayed by freight traffic; do not book a tight onward connection.
  • Bike theft is a constant concern: use a high-quality lock, not a cable.
  • Hotel prices spike on home football weekends and parent-student weekends.
  • Winter brings ice and wind chill; sidewalks are cleared unevenly.
