Champaign-Urbana is a metro of about 220,000 people in central Illinois, built around the University of Illinois campus and split between two downtowns: Champaign, which grew along the railroad, and Urbana, which came first. It is a stop, not a destination week: one or two nights covers the museums, the two downtowns and the campus, and it works as a break on the Chicago–New Orleans Amtrak line. Costs are low by US big-city standards, the grid is flat and easy to cycle, and the main planning job is picking which downtown to sleep in.

Get around
CUMTD buses cover both cities and campus; adult fare is $1.00 and campus routes (1 Yellow, 5 Green, 10 Gold, 12 Teal, 13 Silver, 22 Illini) run every 10–15 min. Hoppers link the two downtowns and campus without a timetable. The grid is flat and good for cycling, but lock properly: bike theft is common. Driving is easy outside campus, where one-way streets and bus-only lanes make loops; avoid the rectangle inside Green, Fourth, Florida/Kirby and Lincoln.
