Tambacounda

One night as a stopover between Dakar and Niokolo-Koba or Casamance; not a destination on its own.

Tambacounda is the transport hub of southeastern Senegal, 400 km from Dakar, and the gateway to Niokolo-Koba National Park. The town itself has a market, a craft village and a historic railway station, but most travellers pass through for one night. The heat is intense, especially March–June, and tourism infrastructure is basic.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.

Watch out

Safety

Tambacounda is generally safe, but petty theft can occur in the market. Avoid walking alone after dark. The main risk is road safety: buses and sept-places are often overloaded and drive fast.
  • Heat: carry water and a hat; the sun is brutal from 11:00–16:00.
  • Mosquitoes: present year-round, worse in the rainy season; sleep under a net.
  • Last buses to Dakar and Kédougou leave by mid-afternoon; confirm departure times locally.
  • The airport has no scheduled flights; do not plan to fly in or out.
