  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Orenburg is the capital of Orenburg Oblast, on the Ural river where the Or joins it, and it was the empire's eastern border when the fortress was founded in 1743. It has a large Turkic population, so the food and street life lean Central Asian. The old fort gate, the museums and the shawl trade fill a day; the city works best as a rail stop on the way to Kazakhstan or the southern Urals, not as a base for a week.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas (fixed-route minivans) cover the city; pay the driver in cash. The centre is walkable between the fort gate, Kirova street and the river embankment. Taxis are cheap by Western standards — agree the price or use an app.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Kirova / Volodarskogo)

Walk to the fort gate, Gostiny Dvor, Tsum and most museums; best for one night without a car.

Station area

Practical for early trains; a short ride from the sights, fewer places to eat late.

Zauralnaya roscha side

Quieter, near the forest-park; needs a bus or taxi for the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Ordinary big-city precautions apply: watch bags on buses and at the station, avoid unlit riverbank paths at night, and keep your passport on you. The bigger question is the country itself — check your government's Russia advice before you travel.
  • Read your own government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything; this desk does not plan around it.
  • Card payments from foreign-issued cards often fail in Russia — carry rubles in cash.
  • Winter is long and cold: −15 °C nights are normal from December to February.
  • The Europe–Asia sign is a photo stop, not the real continental boundary.
