Orenburg is the capital of Orenburg Oblast, on the Ural river where the Or joins it, and it was the empire's eastern border when the fortress was founded in 1743. It has a large Turkic population, so the food and street life lean Central Asian. The old fort gate, the museums and the shawl trade fill a day; the city works best as a rail stop on the way to Kazakhstan or the southern Urals, not as a base for a week.
