  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Berlin is a former paper-mill city at the northern edge of the White Mountains, now an outdoor base: the Androscoggin River runs through downtown and Jericho Mountain State Park, a few minutes west, anchors one of the largest ATV trail networks in the Northeast. Downtown is small and walkable; the trails, lakes and forest roads are not, so a car or an ATV is the difference between a stop and a trip. Most visitors come for a weekend of riding, paddling or fishing, or use it as a bed base for the Great North Woods.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown Berlin is compact and walkable. For Jericho Mountain State Park, the trail network, the lakes and anything north you need a car; there is no useful visitor bus. Tri County Transit runs local service in Berlin and to Gorham — check current routes and days. In winter, snow tyres or all-wheel drive help on the back roads.

A full day with Pittsburg; on its own it is a long drive for a small town.

Lancaster, New Hampshire

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive NH-110 west then US-2 west, about 45 min

Covered bridge, small downtown and the Northern Forest Heritage Park side of the region.

Stark

caution

Door to door: About 35 min

Drive NH-110 west, about 35 min

A short stop for the covered bridge and fall colour, not a day on its own.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Berlin

Walkable to Moffett House and the river; a handful of motels and inns, most on or near Main Street.

Jericho Mountain / NH-110 west

Closest to the ATV trailheads and Jericho Lake campground; you need a car for food and fuel.

Gorham (10 min east)

More beds, restaurants and services on NH-16; a practical base if Berlin is full.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet city with normal US small-town risk: the real hazards are wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, cold water and fast current on the Androscoggin, and no cell signal on forest roads. Lock your car and gear at trailheads.
  • Many ATV trails are open only in the designated season and require a New Hampshire OHRV registration; check the state parks site before you tow a machine here.
  • Cell coverage drops fast on forest roads north and west of town; download offline maps.
  • Moose and deer on NH-16 and NH-110 at dawn and dusk, especially Sep–Oct.
  • Winter temperatures fall well below freezing and some seasonal businesses close from November to April.
