Xilitla is a small mountain town in the Huasteca Potosina whose reason to exist for travellers is Las Pozas, the concrete sculpture garden Edward James built in the jungle above town. The town itself is a few steep cobblestone blocks, a 16th-century convent and a market. Two nights covers Las Pozas properly plus one spring or cave; three nights if you want to slow down and use it as a base for the Huasteca's waterfalls.

Getting around

The centre is walkable but the streets are steep cobblestone. Taxis are cheap and plentiful; there is no Uber. Combis run a fixed route from downtown to Las Pozas. For the caves and springs you will need a taxi or a tour.

Watch out

Safety

Xilitla is a small town and the tourist core is calm; the real risks are mountain driving, wet-season roads and unlit streets after dark. Keep to daylight transfers and use taxis at night.
  • Las Pozas caps daily entries and sells out in high season: book online ahead, or buy same-day at the Museo Leonora Carrington box office or the plaza kiosk.
  • Mountain roads have topes, blind curves and fast overtaking; drive only in daylight.
  • Some stretches of the old highway have a crime record: do not stop on quiet sections at night.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September can close roads; check locally before a long transfer.
