Destination OS · An old harbour, a covered market, a long coast road
Moroni
Moroni is a morning city: do the old town and the covered market before the heat, rest at midday, keep to a car after dark — and dress and behave as a guest in a conservative Muslim town.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
- African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
- Comoros ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Comorian authorities before booking; visas on arrival have been available for many nationalities, but confirm before you fly.
- Comoros ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.
- Comoros ↗Inter-island flights and boats are irregular and sea crossings can be unsafe in rough weather; prefer flights and keep a buffer day.
- Grande Comore (Ngazidja) ↗Climb Mount Karthala only with a local guide, and check its status with your guide first: eruptions and gas emissions have closed the crater in the past.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Moroni is the capital, on the west coast of Grande Comore below Mount Karthala. The old town around the harbour and the Friday mosque is small and walkable; the covered market, the seafront hotels and the historic town of Iconi are each a short taxi ride away. The trips that go wrong ignore three things: dress and etiquette, cash (few machines take foreign cards) and flights, which are few and arrive at odd hours. Four clusters cover a first visit; Karthala and the north-coast beaches are trips from one kept bed.

- Don't confuse
- Moroni is the capital of the Union of the Comoros on Grande Comore; Mayotte, nearby, is French territory with separate entry rules.

- Mid
- KMF 15,000–40,000 excl. bed / day
- High
- KMF 40,000+ excl. bed / day
- IC card
- No transit card: taxis, shared taxis (taxi-brousse) and walking short distances.
- Cash rule
- Bring euros in cash and change what you need at a bank or a licensed bureau; cash machines that take foreign cards are rare, so carry KMF 10,000 in small notes for daily costs.
Survive
Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.
Safety
- Petty theft is uncommon but not unknown: keep phones and cash out of sight in the market.
- Heat and humidity: shade or AC stop every 60–90 minutes; drink bottled water.
- Medical care is very limited: keep your evacuation insurance details on your phone.
- Emergency numbers are unreliable: save your hotel's, driver's, insurer's and embassy's numbers.
Red lines
- Mosques: non-Muslims should not enter unless invited; dress covered and look from outside.
- Do not photograph the port, soldiers, police or government buildings.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women.
Practical
- Toilets: hotels and cafés; carry tissues.
- Tap water is not for drinking.
- Power cuts happen: carry a power bank.
